New Year – New Self Care Routine

The New Year always brings new routines and new goals. While it can be hard to stick to new routines, it can be so rewarding when your skin is healthier, self-confidence is boosted, and you’re back to your rejuvenated self. Here are some self care ideas you should consider for 2020:

Take a bath

Take that extra time to soak – bring on the bubbles, the candles, the soft music, and a glass of wine! Relax in the water and let go of the stress you’ve accumulated from the week. 

Meditate

If you’re not sure where to start on this, Youtube has some great guided meditations that work to get you in the right mindset. 

Start doing yoga

Yoga helps your body to slow down and respect its breath and movements – which is why it’s a great de-stressor! 

Read a book

Yep, you heard us; A good old-fashioned book. Pick up a classic or go for a new book everyone is raving about and get immersed in someone else’s story.

Exercise

Whether it’s dancing, playing softball, going for a run, or lifting some weights at the gym, find what gets your heart pumping and feel that endorphin high! 

Go out with friends

For those that are extroverted in nature, getting out and feeling a crowd of friends and strangers around you is a way to power up again.

Binge watch a show on Netflix

Sometimes you just need to not do anything productive! Don’t feel bad about literally taking time to do nothing to balance your plate.

Journal

Writing down your thoughts at the same time every day is a great way to become more introspective. Don’t worry about writing down specific things, just write down what comes to you!

Listen to a podcast

There are so many categories for podcasts to listen to – crime, business, comedy, sports, history, you name it! Pick one that you’re interested in and pop in those headphones!

Take a trip

When it feels like life is just getting too heavy where you live and work, take a break! There are beautiful, amazing lands all across the world waiting to be explored by you. 

Organize your room/office

It’s the new year – which means it’s time to cut out all the unnecessary. Take stock of your office, bedroom, or even your home to declutter and organize for 2020.

Skin Care and Preparing for Winter

With all the anticipation of Fall approaching, many people look past the fact that winter is right behind it! Rigid wind and temperatures tend to suck the natural oils out of your skin, leaving you cracked and dry for the season. Dehydration can not only leave you feeling uncomfortable in your own skin, but it can lead to flaking, cracking, and dullness. There are a few skin care routines that can help you stay ahead of this dry season – the only require is a small amount of extra attention and time to prepare!

The easiest step, but most overlooked is to KEEP IT COOLED DOWN!

Long, hot showers or baths is the quickest way to dry your skin out! Although it can feel nice to jump in that steaming hot bathtub whenever it is below freezing outside- try to limit yourself. A hot shower or bath once or twice a week can fulfill your steaming hot needs, but also leaves 5 or 6 days out of the week for a normal, healthy temperature.

Another method to preventing dry skin is to MOISTURIZE!

Using moisturizer is a good habit for everyday use, but you must take it the extra mile for winter! If your regular moisturizer does not seem to be getting the job done, try switching to a thicker formula that might work better. If you are confused about what formula is best for your skin, some key words to look for are “hydrating,” “healing,” “hyaluronic acid” and “antioxidants”.

Keeping that summer glow throughout winter is possible with exfoliating!

Exfoliation is good for the face and body! Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, moisturizes, polishes the skin and can prevent breakouts! Exfoliating can help clear our pores and prep for our beauty products. You should do this 1-3 times per week, either in the shower or at the sink, wherever is most convenient!

Something you shouldn’t forget to do is protect your lips!

This can be as easy as applying lip balm before bed, when you wake up, after you brush your teeth or after eating. Any activity that can remove the previous layer, you should reapply after. A good idea is to use a thicker, healing formula when ending the day that way it can work its magic overnight, without interruptions.

Sometimes you can follow all the steps and still have irritated skin in the winter. This is most likely from overloading your skin!

Overloading can tend to overwhelm and stress out your skin. It is best to not add a ton of new products at once. Overhauling your skin care products can clog up your pores, dry out your skin and cause breakouts. You should try to space out the new products and make sure you are not using a ton of products on the same area at once.

Microdermabrasion vs Dermaplaning

Microdermabrasion and dermaplaning…. Both words that sound a little scary, especially if you haven’t had either of them done before. However, these two treatments are great ways to rejuvenate skin and get rid of dead skin cells (not to mention how much more popular they’ve become in recent years!). Here’s what you need to know about them:

Microdermabrasion

This is done by exfoliating your skin to remove the dead skin cells and works to smooth fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, and sun damage with a diamond tip wand. It’s a little hand held device that gently sands that top layer of skin. This is a non invasive technique that is a great alternative to chemical peels!

We recommend getting a microdermabrasion treatment done in a series (anywhere from 4 to 6 treatments) to ensure you get the best results. From there, it’s up to you how often you’d like to receive the treatment, although you should keep in mind that your skin generally sheds and regenerates every month!

Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a favorite among our clients because it gets rid of the face’s peach fuzz and old, dry skin to reveal perfectly smooth and glowing skin underneath. This treatment includes the use of a surgical scalpel to carefully remove the top layer of dead skin, allowing greater penetration of beauty products and easier makeup application!

What is a Back Facial?

Facials can be extremely beneficial for reducing clogged pores, acne, and dehydrated skin. This isn’t only limited to regular facials, either! Back facials have the same benefits as regular facials but allow you to cleanse and target those hard to reach areas.

Dermaplaning vs. Full Face Waxing and Shaving

Everyone likes having smooth skin, and for many people, their faces are no exception. To get rid of the peach fuzz (also called Vellus hair) on your face, there are some options.

Dermaplaning is a treatment that should only be provided by a licensed professional. During this process, the skin is pulled taut on the face while a surgical blade is used to closely cut the fine hair and dead skin. Unlike other methods, using this treatment allows the hair to grow back softer and is a better exfoliant. Learn more about dermaplaning.

While waxing is a common option people utilize, there are a few things to keep in mind. We always recommend using a test spot before waxing the entire face to ensure your skin isn’t sensitive to the wax being used. Once again, you should use a professional for waxing to ensure the process is done smoothly and doesn’t leave behind scarring.

Another option is to shave the hair off of your face. People typically do this at home and must do this method more often as the hair tends to grow back quicker than the other options. Shaving tends to blunt the hair so that it doesn’t act as well as an exfoliant and could potentially lead to ingrown hairs or razor burn. This option does not offer the same exfoliation as the other two methods.

Everyone’s skin is different, and we encourage you to find the method that works with your routine the best. If you have low pain tolerance, you should look into dermaplaning or shaving options, as waxing can be painful.

Summer Skin Care

Just because you’re out and about during the summer, that doesn’t mean you get to skip out on skin care! This is the time when you tend to bare a lot more skin than the winter months, which means you’re exposing it to bad UV rays, slathering on greasy sunscreen, and clogging up pores with sweat (can you just feel the breakouts happening??). During the hot, humid, summer months is when your skin especially needs a boost of love, and here’s what you can do:

While you might think that the look of tans are worth the damage, they really aren’t. Tanning beds and harmful UV levels will lead to wrinkles, dryness, and might even lead to skin cancer. We recommend using high SPF sunscreen and moisturizing often to lock in your skin’s glow for years to come. Don’t forget those lips either! Look for lip balm with an SPF of 15 to keep those smackers smackin’.

If you feel that you really want that summer tan, but don’t want to damage your skin, invest in a sunless tanner! These can give you that darker tint and still leave your skin looking beautiful.

Exfoliating can also help your skin stay fresh and clear by rubbing out all the dirt and getting rid of the dull skin on top. What You Should Know About Chemical Peels

The word “chemical” scares people off – we’re so used to hearing the worst things about chemicals that many of us don’t think about the benefits. The facials that we provide use a mild acid to gently remove the damaged layers of your skin, leaving behind beautifully smooth and glowing skin.

During the consultation with your esthetician, she will go over the type of facial she recommends for you (or if you have one in mind, she will explain what it all entails). Each facial has its different perks; some boost collagen to encourage a youthful and radiant glow, and others focus on removing dead skin to reveal the beautiful new skin underneath.

Peels can be completed anywhere between 30 minutes to one hour – the length of time is determined by the type of massage. For most, the healing process after a peel usually takes about one to two weeks. Because of this, we recommend getting a chemical peel no more than once every few weeks. While getting a facial peel is great for you, you want to give your skin enough time to build up another protective layer before getting another one.

Depending on the peel, clients can expect some minor flaking, irritation, and redness at least the first few days. This is your body’s way of promoting new, healthy skin growth in place of the dead cells that were removed during the chemical peel.

It’s important to remember that chemical peels are safe when performed by a professional. Once you see your new, cleansed, toned, refreshed skin, there will be no going back! (This is where people get hooked!) We’re now in a new year, it’s time to really evaluate the aspects of your life and make them what you want them to be!

Another thing to keep in mind is what you’re putting into your body during season changes. Constantly inhaling greasy food and unhealthy snacks will put you into a funk. Focus on eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables – they give a natural boost to your mood and energy! Staying hydrated also has a huge impact on your overall health – we recommend getting at least 8 glasses of water in your system a day.

Herbal Oil on a Molecular Level

Herbal oil isn’t a magical cure-all potion, and it’s not something made to get you high; Cannabidiol (aka Herbal Oil) is a part of the cannabis plant that can leave a therapeutic, relaxing effect on people and truly impact your body in a positive way. With the recent interest in herbal oil, a lot of rumors have started to circulate. We hope that by explaining exactly how herbal oil affects your brain, many of the stereotypes and myths you have heard about will be dispelled.

Within your brain, the endocannabinoid system’s most important function is to maintain balance and homeostasis of almost everything going on in your body. CB1 and CB2 receptors make up the system, and these receptors are activated by anandamide and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol. Anandamide stimulates the CB1 receptors; while 2-AG stimulates both the CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 controls several physiological functions like sleeping, appetite, emotion, sensory perception, memory, and cognition; CB2 activation controls inflammation since these receptors are predominantly found in the immune system.

Now, THC binds to the CB1 receptors, altering your state of mind. Herbal oil, unlike THC, has a low binding affinity with the CB1 receptors which means it will not give you that ‘high’ feeling. Instead, CBD binds to different receptors and activates them to produce its therapeutic effects by getting transported by fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) to go through cell membranes.

One of the most common uses for herbal oil is for anxiety, as it directly activates a receptor called serotonin. As we know, serotonin creates a relaxing, calming effect on a person which can help with things like addiction, insomnia, and pain management (and so much more). Herbal oil also binds with TRPV1 receptors, which is known to mediate pain perception, inflammation, and body temperature making even more of an impact on your physical being. These are just a couple of the receptors that herbal oil influences,  it’s been found that there are more than 65 molecular targets of Cannabidiol!

Remember how we mentioned Anandamide earlier? It is known as your ‘bliss molecule’ and is naturally found in the body. As mentioned, it stimulates your CB1 receptors which have a big impact on your emotions and sensory preception. Unfortunately anadamide gets transported by FABP to the enzymes that break it down, taking away its therapeutic effects. While herbal oil is in your system it is competing for FABP, leaving fewer for anadamide to bind with, thus leaving more of it in your body! Just another positive effect on your body by herbal oil!
