Top Ten Reasons to Get A Monthly Facial

closeup woman's face chin being massaged

Most people don’t understand the benefits that a good professional facial can offer and wait until they encounter a skin concern (weird breakouts, dry itchy skin, dark spots, etc.) or have an upcoming special event before coming in for a facial. These frustrating problems can often be preempted by proper monthly facials and counseling on the correct at-home products.

Your skin is always on display and often has the power to dictate how good we feel about ourselves. Investing in proper skincare has a value that can be arguably more important than buying a new dress or going out to a fancy restaurant. Our facials at Precision Wellness are affordable, customized, relaxing, comfortable, and come with personal attention and great service.

Facials are ideal once a month unless you have a specific skin concern you are trying to overcome (acne, hyper-pigmentation, etc), then you may need to come in for a series of treatments. The reason behind getting monthly facials is that your stratum corneum (the outermost layer of visible skin) will completely renew itself approximately every 28 days. In this time your skin cells are constantly being replicated from the treated cells to replace the old cells.

If you give your skin a head start (i.e. a great facial) your skin cells will begin to replicate the now healthier cells and thus give you a better complexion. Also, most skin products can take up to 6-8 weeks to start to treat active skin cells, but by speeding up the renewal process with a facial you can make these products work faster and more effectively.

Aside from just feeling like heaven, here are the Top 10 Reasons you should come to Precision Welless for monthly facials:

  1. Facials allow you to relax. They feel great and are healing to the soul. The power of touch, massage, proper technique, and professional products can heal. We call facials “relaxing with benefits”. Stress relief and beautiful glowing skin? YES PLEASE!
  2. Facials increase circulation of the blood under the skin allowing the skin optimal health to facilitate the renewal skin cells.
  3. Facials decrease waste underneath the skin that can cause puffiness, ruddiness, and fluid accumulation by manipulating the lymphatic system that lies just under the skin. Facials also aids in detoxification.
  4. A good facial helps smooth fine lines and promote collagen production, which is the building block of the skin (to prevent premature aging, wrinkles, and sagging).
  5. A facial will cleanse your pores on a much deeper level. Similar to a good dental cleaning, this is what a facial can do for the skin/pores. Even non-acneic skin can use a good deep cleanse. Extractions/cleaning out the pores can help to maintain clear skin, stop acne formation, as well as can help to change the pore’s size. Often times left unchecked, pores can start to stretch and widen with the accumulation of oil and debris. Never attempt to extract or pick at your own skin unless you are a professional and know how to do it properly. You could be at risk of scarring and infection.
  6. Facials provide deeper exfoliation than you can achieve at home. Exfoliation smooths skin, allows for great penetration of products (i.e. moisturizers or serums), unclogs pores, improves skin ability to retain hydration, and evens skin tone to just name a few benefits.
  7. Allows our professionally trained esthetician to counsel you on the proper products you should be using at home. This alone is worth the investment as the skincare industry can be a difficult (and expensive) area to navigate.
  8. Can help even skin tone and lighten dark spots. Dark spots age our skins’ appearance visibly. Remember that sunscreen is still a necessity no matter how great the facial.
  9. Facials slow the aging process. They allow your skin to feel healthier, smoother and look more radiant. Facials reduce fine lines, age spots, and relieve dehydrated skin. With these benefits, facials make us feel better about our skin. With the use of exfoliation and the penetration of nutrients and antioxidants, facials also fight to reverse aging. We will all age, but we can do it more slowly with glowing, firm, and hydrated skin.
  10. Facials are not a miracle in an hour but they do give you a fresh start to a healthier and balanced complexion. Regular facials will help you maintain optimal skin health.

If you’re ready to start taking better care of your skin, then we encourage you to consider getting in habit of having a monthly facial. You’ll look younger, feel better and it’s a great investment in your physical and mental well being.

Cold Weather Skin Care Tips

woman-in-towel-putting-moisturizer-on-her-leg

As the weather turns colder many of us look forward to pumpkin spice lattes and hot chocolate, but the colder weather is not great for our skin. This is caused by the low humidity levels in the air which causes the air to be very dry, and in turn, removes the moisture from the skin. Cracking, bleeding, and itching skin are just some of the results of cold weather and lack of action to care for the moisture-lacking skin. When it’s time to turn on the furnace, many don’t realize that heat also steals the moisture from the skin through rough cleansers and hot showers.

Even though adding consistent moisture helps, most will need to do more to counteract the results of moisture lacking skin and will keep the skin looking healthy and smooth. At Precision Wellness, we realize that skincare and maintenance of moisture are very important and vital to healthy, youthful, and glowing skin. To reduce these problems, here are some tips from our Precision Wellness expert estheticians to keep your skin healthy and youthful.

Lukewarm Water is Your Friend

Even though hot showers always feel great when it’s cold, it is damaging your skin at the same time. A good time to use lukewarm water is when you’re just washing your face or hands, to avoid taking the oils away from the skin.

Moisturize Right After Every Wash

Your skin consistently needs moisture and moisturizing right after you wash is a great habit to get into. When you moisturize right after showering, it seals in the moisture you received from a lukewarm shower or bath. After you wash, it is good to have a bottle of lotion near you as a reminder to always apply it.

Choose Your Moisturizer Cautiously

Some of the very common moisturizers have petroleum-based ingredients, which can lead your skin to be drier in the winter months. A smart formula that has natural and nourishing ingredients is the best way to go when choosing a moisturizer. Also, an oil-based solution is a better option rather than a water-based one because it helps your skin retain moisture better. Here at Precision Wellness, we can give you more information on ingredients to avoid and ones to seek out.

Weather Protection

Wearing gloves and scarves are a must to protect skin from all of the harsh cold weather events that could happen. However, most forget that even if it’s not summer anymore, sunscreen is still essential to protecting your skin from the sun. While most will think that the summer sun is more damaging, in the winter the sun is just as strong and there is already a lack of moisture so apply sunscreen to any visible skin.

Humidify Your Home

While heating systems are very important in cold winter, they can dry out the air, but a humidifier can remedy this problem. They put moisture back into the air within your home and will then prevent your skin from drying out.

Drink More Water

Even though hot drinks like hot chocolate and tea are great in the winter, don’t forget that your body needs a lot of water because your skin also gets in moisture from the inside of your body. Warm water with lemon can be very effective in aiding in moisture and meets the heated drink requirement while also staying very hydrated at the same time.

Moisturize Every Night

Hands, elbows, feet, and knees tend to have thin skin and will lose moisture quicker than other areas. Using a deep moisturizing balm at night will hold the moisture in overnight and wearing socks after applying this balm will seal in the moisture.

Exfoliate Every Week

Most forget that if the dead cells are too plentiful, the moisture can’t find a way in, so exfoliating every week is essential. An exfoliating mask and body washes are great to use, especially when followed by a hydrating lotion or balm. Here at Precision Wellness, our estheticians specialize in exfoliating facials and body treatments and following with a moisturizer.

Avoid Toxins

Eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis are all very sensitive to allergens and irritants which can trigger a flare-up of the condition. This is because winter skin is more sensitive, so try and avoid irritating fabrics, use mild cleansers and sensitive skin moisturizers.

Hydrating Foods

Consuming foods high in water will help hydrate your skin from the inside. Apples, oranges, and watermelon are great fruit while, celery, tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots are great high water vegetables. Consider an omega-3 supplement, or possibly consume more fatty fish, if it works with your doctor’s recommended diet, to give your skin the building blocks it needs to appear smooth and healthy.

Switch Up Your Cleanser

Cleansers can be extremely drying to the skin. It is good to find more than one cleanser that works for your skin type and switch them every couple of months. After cleansing, apply a moisturizer to seal in the moisture.

We hope you found these skincare tips helpful and here at Precision Wellness we are always happy to help you achieve the relaxation or smooth skin you desire.

Everything You Need To Know About Microdermabrasion

Woman-getting-a-microdermabrasion-treatment

What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a very popular, machine-assisted skin-exfoliating treatment. Microdermabrasion has advantages of low risk and rapid recovery compared to the other more invasive resurfacing methods such as dermabrasion, chemical peeling, and laser resurfacing. Since microdermabrasion produces only a very superficial depth of skin removal, it works best on improving conditions on the surface of the skin such as early photoaging (sun damage), fine lines, age spots, acne, and superficial scarring, although the results are not dramatic. Although the face is the most common area for microdermabrasion, any skin area, including neck, chest, back, and hands, may be treated. Microdermabrasion is sometimes referred to as “Microderm,” lunchtime peel, Parisian Peel, and Diamond Peel.

Microdermabrasion is a painless, noninvasive, skin-rejuvenation procedure using a combination of a fine abrasive tip or crystals and vacuum suction applied to the skin. There are no needles or anesthetics required for microdermabrasion. The vacuum pressure and speed are adjusted depending on the sensitivity and tolerance of the skin. Microdermabrasion is often compared to the feeling of a cat licking your face, a rough but gentle texture. Typical microdermabrasion sessions can last anywhere from five to 60 minutes. Minimal to no recovery time is required after microdermabrasion and most people immediately return to daily activity after a session. Makeup and nonirritating creams can usually be applied right after microdermabrasion. Studies have shown that microdermabrasion can even temporarily facilitate the absorption of some topical medications by increasing the permeability of the skin.

Microdermabrasion works by removing a few of the top layers of the skin called the stratum corneum. Much like brushing your teeth, Microderm helps to gently remove “plaque” and skin debris. Since human skin typically regenerates at approximately 30-day intervals, skin improvement with microdermabrasion is temporary and needs to be repeated at average intervals of two to four weeks for continued improvement. Multiple treatments in combination with sunscreen, sun avoidance, and other skin-care creams yield the best results.

Who Should Consider Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is somewhat useful for people with dull or sallow skin, mild acne, acne discoloration, pick marks, and very superficial acne scars. Microdermabrasion may be a good treatment option for patients with superficial skin problems and busy lifestyles who are looking for minimal benefits with virtually no side effects or downtime. Individuals with deeper acne scars may expect a much longer series of treatments or likely benefit from physician-performed surgical dermabrasion, chemical peeling, or laser resurfacing.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

A crystal microdermabrasion system contains a pump, a connecting tube, a handpiece, and a vacuum. While the pump creates a high-pressure stream of inert crystals, such as aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, sodium chloride, and sodium bicarbonate, to abrade the skin, the vacuum removes the crystals and exfoliated skin cells. Alternatively, the inert crystals can be replaced by a roughened surface of the tip in the diamond microdermabrasion system.

Unlike the crystal microdermabrasion system, our diamond-tipped microdermabrasion machine does not produce particles from crystals that may be inhaled into a patient’s nose or blown into the eyes. Therefore our diamond-tipped microdermabrasion is safer for use on areas around the eyes and lips. Generally, the slower the movement of the handpiece against the skin and the more numbers of passes over the skin, the deeper the treatment.

What Ages Are Appropriate for Microdermabrasion?

While there are no specific age or sex restrictions, typically children over age 12 up to adults age 65 can get microdermabrasion. While there is no age maximum, mature skin over age 70 may have slightly higher risks of bruising and skin abrasions. Individuals younger than age 12 may sometimes also receive treatment under the care of a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

How Often Can I Have Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion can be done as frequently as weekly or up to every eight weeks depending on your skin’s tolerance and desired cosmetic effects. Many people choose to start with weekly treatments for three sessions, then change to a monthly maintenance regimen.
Much like brushing your teeth, microdermabrasion helps to gently remove skin debris. Since human skin typically regenerates at approximately 30-day intervals, skin improvement with microdermabrasion is temporary and needs to be repeated at average intervals of two to four weeks for continued improvement. Usually, multiple treatments (six to 12 sessions) are recommended to see a significant improvement.

What Should I Expect Before, During, and After Microdermabrasion?

Softer and smoother skin that feels fresher and more rejuvenated is the expected outcome after microdermabrasion. Before starting the microdermabrasion treatment, eye protection such as eye pads or goggles may be placed. Often the skin may be prepared and cleaned of makeup and oils. No local anesthetic is required. The skin will be stretched to provide some tension in order to achieve the most effective abrasion and vacuum. The handpiece is moved over the skin with repeated single, smooth passes. Usually, two to four passes per area are sufficient.

Mild pinkness of the skin is the desired outcome and usually resolves within minutes to hours after microdermabrasion. In addition, mild exfoliation of skin may occur as well. Continuously apply moisturizer or ointment if exfoliation occurs. Clients may also experience a mild sunburn-like sensation for a few days. Moreover, liberal application of sunscreen is recommended as photosensitivity may be increased after treatment.

Microdermabrasion may help stimulate the production of collagen, thereby helping skin rejuvenation. As age spots from photoaging and fine lines are diminished, the skin may become softer and smoother.

Summertime Facials

Once the socks get stuffed in the drawers and the closed-toed shoes and boots get tossed to the back of the closet, and the bare feet, sandals and strappy stilettos come out for some fun in the sun, most people opt for pedicures at the spa instead of going for a facial. I’d like to suggest that getting a customized facial in the summer is definitely worth the investment also.

Our complexion changes with the seasons and it’s important to adjust your skincare routine to reflect the current environmental conditions. Your skin may have been dry and dehydrated this past winter because of low temperatures and cold winds mixed with heat from furnaces. But now, with the extra sun exposure and heat and increased activity, your skin may be turning more oily, or sensitive or may have more breakouts than usual.

How is a person supposed to keep up with all of these fluctuations and variations? The answer — having a facial. A facial with a professional esthetician will help clear up any outstanding issues you may be having with your skin this summer.

What is a Facial?

A facial treatment is a professional service designed to improve and rejuvenate the skin on the face, neck, shoulders and decolleté. Getting regular facials will definitely and noticeably improve your skin’s appearance and texture.

The Benefits of Getting a Facial

There are many benefits associated with getting a facial and they all come back to managing stress. Stress itself isn’t the bad guy — it’s the amount of stress and the way you deal with it that makes a difference in your life. For example, stress is one of the aggravating factors of acne but if you learn how to reduce the stress in your life with healthy habits such as getting regular facials and eating nutritious food and exercising daily, you will significantly improve the tone of your skin. And you’ll feel so much better.

Getting a facial also gives you a chance to try out a particular skin care product line to see how it behaves on your skin, before you purchase it. I think that’s a wise approach. Ask me which skincare line I use in my Homespunspa facials and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

The benefits of a Facial include:

  1. Maintaining healthy skin and having radiant-looking skin;
  2. Correcting certain skin conditions such as overexposure to Ultraviolet Rays from the sun;
  3. Treating conditions such as dryness, oiliness or redness;
  4. Deep cleansing and releasing environmental pollution like smog that may be trapped in your pores;
  5. Exfoliation and Refinement which makes your skin feel smoother and softer;
  6. Increasing circulation;
  7. Detoxification;
  8. Relaxation of the body and mind through massage and aromatherapy;
  9. Stimulation of metabolism;
  10. Looking younger and more beautiful;
  11. Slowing down premature aging and softening lines and wrinkles;
  12. Helping clear up blemishes and minor acne;
  13. Reducing stress;
  14. Sleeping better at night.

What to expect from a Facial

When you come to a spa for a facial, you’ll be asked to fill out a confidential questionnaire and change into a gown and remove your jewellery and socks and shoes. You may also get a foot soak. Then you’ll lie down on a facial bed. You and your esthetician will talk about your needs and concerns and then both of you will determine the best course of action for your skin.

Steps in a Facial

  1. Consultation;
  2. Make up removal and Cleansing;
  3. Skin Analysis;
  4. Refinement Masque (Exfoliation);
  5. Skin Balancing;
  6. Hand, Foot, Neck, Shoulder and Facial Massages;
  7. Treatment Masque & Serums; and
  8. Moisturization and Sun Protection.

You may also receive extra services like: detoxification massage, pressure point massage, attention around your eyes, extractions, or make up application, etc. On top of all of that, you’ll also learn a lot about your own skin and how to take care of it and which products and services will benefit you the most.

What To Expect During Facials

Why Are Facials Important?

With exercise, eating right and treating yourself to a monthly hair cut and color, a facial is just another thing to pamper yourself. Here at Precision Wellness, we believe that a facial can not only allow you the relaxation you deserve but the rejuvenating treatment your skin deserves. Facials help prevent and treat common problems that affects the skin on your face.

For example, when winter is coming up and you feel the cold as soon as you walk outside, most notice a change in the way their skin feels over time. This is because when its cold there is no moisture in the air, which dehydrates your skin. Facials at Precision Wellness can correct this problem immediately and will exfoliate and infuse your skin with moisture. On the other side, when summer approaches the weather starts to become warm, which means the air is infused with moisture and so in turn is your skin, which can cause oily skin and breakouts. Facials at Precision Wellness can also correct this problem.

What Are the Benefits Of A Facial?

Facials at Precision Wellness can give you a glowing complexion, smooth and firm skin texture, hydrated skin and breakouts are decreased. Also, the more you receive facials, the more your skin starts to show its youthful glow more each time you receive a treatment.

How Often Should I Get One?

Since no one has the same skin, we at Precision Wellness specialize your facial based on your skin type and what it needs. However, we recommend seeing our esthetician once a month. When it comes to oily skin clients, it is more necessary to receive a facial in the summertime where the moisture in the air is at an all-time high. For those with dry skin, it is important to receive a facial in the winter months to avoid dehydrated skin.

What to Know Before You Get a Facial

While facials are relaxing and rejuvenating for your skin and psyche, there might be a few uncomfortable moments while receiving a facial. However, they will be worth it in the end. Extractions are likely to be the most uncomfortable step in a facial process. This is when our esthetician will exfoliate your pores by extracting anything that is clogging your pores. Our estheticians at Precision Wellness know the right pressure and angle to extract to achieve the clearest pores possible while avoiding blemishes that are not ready to be extracted because that could cause scarring. Also, there could be some redness that could follow a facial, but it most commonly goes away in about a day.

Make Your Results Last

When receiving a facial from Precision Wellness, we want everyone to be aware of how to maintain the results of your facial by cleansing and moisturizing enough. Our expert estheticians can give you advice on products to use based on your skin type and how many extractions were performed during your facial.

10 Reasons to Get a Facial

gloved hands performing microdermabrasion on womans face

1. Skin Analysis by our Esthetician Experts

Wherever you go to purchase your skin care products, chances are they see your face with your make up on. The benefits of getting your skin analyzed through professional facials are that the esthetician will see you without makeup to reveal your true skin type. This allows our esthetician to see what your unique needs are through professional treatments and suggest the best products for your home care routine. Our esthetician also works with your skin for over an hour so they will achieve a proper analysis of what skin type you have. This is exposure that a consultant in a department store may not offer.

2. Professional Strength Exfoliation

Our facial treatments include a form of exfoliation using microdermabrasion, two different types of enzyme peals and a scrub. Some of the exfoliating ingredients can be found in your skin care products but during a facial you will experience the treatment at our professional strength. The facial exfoliation is specifically catered towards your skin type so that it will leave you with results that include smooth skin, decreased skin discoloration and increase cellular growth.

3. Clean Blackheads and Clogged Pores

With proper facial exfoliation preparation and skin softening techniques, our esthetician will use a skilled method to extract clogged pores, blackheads, and impurities without causing irritation or harm to your skin. People usually have a hard time eliminating blackheads at home, because home care products can only help to reduce clogged pores. However, it takes a professional esthetician to properly prepare the skin before manual extractions can take place in a safe and effective way.

4. Hydration

Every skin type no matter the difference needs hydration. It does not matter if you have oily, acne prone skin, or dry and flakey skin, your skin cells need to be hydrated to survive. In order to maintain healthy skin, it is imperative to keep it topically hydrated. With oilier skin types, the face tends to produce more oil when moisture is lacking, which is the opposite of your intention and need. Oily skin needs moisture, but the moisture it’s seeking is water, not oil. Hydrated skin is healthy skin and a facial will help to regulate the proper moisture level for whatever skin type you may be.

5. Increase Circulation to Enhance Your Natural Glow

When blood circulation slows, the skin’s health and appearance is impaired. Slowed circulation is a negative aspect of aging, which results in dull, wrinkled, tired looking skin. One important benefit of a facial is a massage to the face and with warm steam, both processes help to increase blood flow bringing nutrients to the skin. This will encourage a youthful radiance and glow to surface in the face.

6. A Review for Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is becoming a more apparent problem in our society so it is very important to regularly check your skin for changes to moles and to look out for abnormal skin growths. Usually these changes are so small and develop at a slow pace so over time that you may not notice it is happening. A benefit of having our esthetician work with your skin is that he or she will analyze your skin and bring to your attention any potential abnormalities that they feel you should check out with your doctor. Our esthetician can be seen as a new set of eyes that may notice skin imperfections that you have not seen, over time.

7. Stress Relief

A facial can offer a vast amount of benefits with the skin and also can be a relaxing technique and can improve the level of stress you are dealing with. Imagine a room with dim lighting, soft music, and a warm, comfy bed. Then add on a face, neck, and shoulder massage. This is the environment you will experience here at Precision Wellness to completely relax and unwind. Studies show that stress can lead to unhealthy skin, so a facial can eliminate stress to promote healing skin.

8. Problem Solving

Whether it’s dry skin, brown spots, redness, irritation, or inflamed acne, a good facial is always customized by our esthetician to focus on what your skin needs. Facials are focused on problem solving and our estheticians are geared to giving you the solution you desire from your facial. By using the right combination of ingredients, our estheticians can improve your skin’s appearance to achieve the greatest possible complexion for you.

9. Our Professional Advice

During a facial, you are with our esthetician for over an hour. This time creates an opportunity for our esthetician to give you their professional advice, skin tips and tricks and plenty of time to ask questions that you may have been curious about. Also, when getting a facial you are receiving a lesson from our expert on how to care for your skin properly. This lesson includes, what your skin type is exactly, which products will work best for your skin type, how your skin interacts with products and how to care for your skin at home so you can maintain the results of your facial.

10. Because You Deserve It

Humans tend to spend a great amount of time caring for other people in their lives. While this can be rewarding, at times it can be mentally and emotionally tiring. When taking a couple of hours to yourself to receive a facial, you wont have to worry or care for anyone but yourself. A facial is for you and gives you the time you need to re-energize, reset and clear your mind.

How Often To Receive a Facial

Understand Timing of Facials

Thinking of scheduling a facial after receiving one should be part of everyone’s custom skin care management plan, but figuring out when is the best time for you depends on a variety of skin care factors. Benefits of a facial at Precision Wellness included warm steam, a hydrating masque, and a gentle massage. After your treatment is done, most feel and see glowing skin, but deciding when to schedule a next appointment may be more complicated than anticipated. Surprisingly, there is not a cycle that everyone uniformly should follow when it comes to facials because a facial is determined by skin type, age, lifestyle and the environment you are in.

Precision Wellness Recommendation

It is the general rule that most people should receive a facial about every three to four weeks. This is because it is how long your skin takes to move through skin cell growth and natural exfoliation, but a facial can do this quicker and more effectively. Facials at Precision Wellness incorporate skin care techniques that will keep your skin clean, hydrated and glowing for upwards of four weeks.

Acne Prone Skin

Oily skin can cause more breakouts to occur, so it is recommended to receive facials more often when breakouts are high. When acne is flaring there is an excess amount of moisture your skin is creating and touching your face, which everyone unconsciously does, leads to clogged pores and breakouts. Once the skin returns to a peaceful place and the acne starts to go away, the need for facials frequently becomes lessened.

Infrequent Facials

Even with the best mindset and healthy skin habits, it is common for budget and personal problems to get in the way of receiving a facial every month. If it is unlikely that you can come in every month, it is highly recommended to come in at least when the seasons are changing. Because of the moisture in the summer and the cold in the winter, your skin is more prone to breakouts or dehydration. Seeing our esthetician at least four times a year will help will help guard your skin from seasonal changes.

Frequent Facials

On the other side of things, too many facials can be a bad thing as well as not enough. If you are following a skin care regimen, then the need to see our estheticians are lessened to every month. Unless you are experiencing a breakout or dehydration, seeing our esthetician can be negative on your skin because of the constant extractions and exfoliation that are incorporated within a facial. With every facial, our esthetician will hydrate and exfoliate your skin and will follow up with advice on skin treatment plans to follow and how to maintain the results you experienced.

Benefits Received Through Facials

facial with tool

While you may enjoy the relaxation you feel when receiving a facial, there are many other benefits that can create healthy glowing skin. Choosing the type of facial you want depends on what results and benefits you are specifically looking for. Some facials are designed to deep-clean the skin, others offer moisturizing benefits, and some help to relieve stress, which can often cause acne. Throughout the many benefits of receiving a facial, cleansing, increased circulation, emotional benefits and anti-aging are the ones we will discuss.

Cleansing

Facials, aromatherapy facials, face packs and massage with facial creams help cleanse the skin, removing toxins caused by dirt and pollution found in your everyday environment. Such facials help to reduce an increased amount of sebum, which is a natural substance that moisturizes the skin. Too much production of sebum can cause skin problems, including blackheads and acne. Cleansing facials open the pores of the skin, remove toxins and dead skin, and cleanse the surface of the skin through exfoliation that will tighten and firm the skin.

Increased Circulation

Facial treatments help to improve and possibly restore circulation to facial skin layers, increasing the flow of blood to skin cells. This rush of blood to the skin gives your skin a healthy glow and increases the size of skin cells with vital nutrients and water, which reduce the appearance of dry and or wrinkled skin. Nutrients such as vitamins and minerals found within the blood, along with adequate hydration, help maintain and develop new skin cells that are essential for a youthful, healthy appearance.

Emotional Benefits

Facial treatments feel good to receive, offering relaxation. Facial massage treatments increase circulation and the flow of blood. They also include a variety of creams, aromatherapy and oils that moisturize the skin, which smell nice, and relieve stress as well as encourage peace of mind.

Anti-Aging

While there is no way to stop the aging process, facials may help slow the skin-aging process and offer you more youthful skin. Intense pulsed light, or IPL, laser treatments remove dead skin cells and increase collagen, cell growth, and development. Examples of common skin laser treatments include DermaWand, OxyLight and Baby Quasar. Each can be used to aid in anti-aging by removing dead and damaged skin and increasing production of collagen, which is essential for healthy skin cells.

Ten Winter Skin Care Tips

ten winter tips woman sweater collar

For many people, the cold clear days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. They also bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin of the face, hands, and feet. For some people, the problem is worse than just a general tight, dry feeling. They get skin so dry it results in flaking, cracking, even eczema (in which the skin becomes inflamed). Here are ten Winter Skin Care facial tips to help get you through the harsh winter:

1. Seek a Specialist

If you go to your local drugstore, you’ll be hard put to find a salesperson who can give you good advice. That’s why going to an esthetician or dermatologist even once is a good investment. Such a specialist can analyze your skin type, troubleshoot your current skin care regimen, and give you advice on the skin care products you should be using.

2. Moisturize More

You may have found a moisturizer that works just fine in spring and summer. But as weather conditions change, so, too, should your skin care routine. Find an “ointment” moisturizer that’s oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. (Hint: Many lotions labeled as “night creams” are oil-based.)But choose your oils with care because not all oils are appropriate for the face.

Instead, look for “nonclogging” oils, like AVOCADO OIL, mineral oil, primrose oil, or almond oil. Shea oil — or butter — is controversial, because it can clog facial pores. And vegetable shortening is a really bad idea. It just sits on the skin and would be really greasy.

3. Slather on the Sunscreen

No, sunscreen isn’t just for summertime. Winter sun — combined with snow glare — can still damage your skin. Try applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and your hands (if they’re exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply frequently if you stay outside a long time.

4. Give Your Hands a Hand

The skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it’s harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. Wear gloves when you go outside; if you need to wear wool to keep your hands warm, slip on a thin cotton glove first, to avoid any irritation the wool might cause.

5. Avoid Wet Gloves and Socks

Wet socks and gloves can irritate your skin and cause itching, cracking, sores, or even a flare-up of eczema.

6. Hook Up the Humidifier

Central heating systems (as well as space heaters) blast hot dry air throughout our homes and offices. Humidifiers get more moisture in the air, which helps prevent your skin from drying out. Place several small humidifiers throughout your home. They help disperse the moisture more evenly.

7. Hydrate for Your Health, Not for Your Skin

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times: Drinking water helps your skin stay young looking. In fact, it’s a myth. Water is good for your overall health and the skin of someone who is severely dehydrated will benefit from fluids. But the average person’s skin does not reflect the amount of water being drunk in one day.

8. Grease Up Your Feet

Yes, those minty foot lotions are lovely in the hot summer months, but during the winter, your feet need stronger stuff. Try finding lotions that contain petroleum jelly or glycerine instead. And use exfoliants to get the dead skin off periodically; that helps any moisturizers you use to sink in faster and deeper.

9. Pace the Peels

If your facial skin is uncomfortably dry, avoid using harsh peels, masks, and alcohol-based toners or astringents, all of which can strip vital oil from your skin. Instead, find a cleansing milk or mild foaming cleanser, a toner with no alcohol, and masks that are “deeply hydrating,” rather than clay-based, which tends to draw moisture out of the face. And use them a little less often.

10. Ban Superhot Baths

Sure, soaking in a burning-hot bath feels great after frolicking out in the cold. But the intense heat of a hot shower or bath actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture.

A lukewarm bath with oatmeal or baking soda can help relieve skin that is so dry it has become itchy So, too, can periodically reapplying your moisturizer. If those techniques don’t work, go see a dermatologist. You may need a prescription lotion to combat the dry skin.

The Science Behind Microdermabrasion

The Basics

Microdermabrasion is a general term for the application of tiny rough grains to buff away the surface layer of skin. Many different products and treatments use this method, including medical procedures, salon treatments, and creams and scrubs that you apply yourself at home. It’s usually done to the face, chest, neck, arms, or hands. Before we can understand how microdermabrasion does what it does, it’s important to understand how the skin works.

Your skin is made up of two main layers, the epidermis, and the dermis. The epidermis is the layer closest to the outside world. It’s a set of dead skin cells on top of another layer of cells that are in the process of maturing. The topmost layer is called the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum mostly acts as a barrier between the outside world and the lower skin layers. It keeps all but the smallest molecules from getting through.

When you put lotions or creams on your skin, some of the moisture passes through the stratum corneum, but not all of it. This layer is home to many minor skin imperfections like fine wrinkle lines and blemishes.

All of the action in microdermabrasion takes place at the level of the stratum corneum. Since it only really targets the epidermis (and not the dermis), it is more accurate to call it micro-epi-dermabrasion. Affecting deeper layers of skin would be painful and harmful, and it would risk permanently embedding the tiny grains into the skin.

Microdermabrasion Effects

Whether done with a product at home or in a professional setting with a specialized tool, the principle of microdermabrasion is the same. The idea is that if you remove or break up the stratum corneum, the body interprets that as a mild injury and rushes to replace the lost skin cells with new and healthy ones. In the first hour after treatment, this causes mild edema (swelling) and erythema (redness). Depending on the individual, these side effects can last anywhere from an hour to two days.

This process has a few beneficial effects. With the stratum corneum gone, the skin’s surface is improved. The healing process brings with it newer skin cells that look and feel smoother. Some of the skin’s visible imperfections, like sun damage, blemishes, and fine lines, are removed. Also, without the stratum corneum acting as a barrier, medicinal creams and lotions are more effective because more of their active ingredients and moisture can find their way down to the lower layers of skin. As microdermabrasion temporarily removes some moisture from the skin, it is always followed by the application of moisturizing creams.

Early studies suggest that repeated microdermabrasion treatment at regular intervals may influence the way the lower layers of skin grow, as well, removing deeper blemishes over time. Some evidence seems to indicate that the rapid loss of skin moisture may be what triggers the lower skin layers to work overtime in speeding healthy cells up to the surface.
